Welcome to the Neighborhood

What is Conant Gardens?

Conant Gardens is a recognized Historic District by the City of Detroit. Named after Shubael Conant, founder of the Detroit Anti-Slavery Society. Similar to many Detroit neighborhoods Conant Gardens did not see dense population until the 20’s and 30’s, after the boom of the auto-industry in the city. Its location in the Northern part of Detroit meant that in its heyday Conant Gardens was a kin to a suburb to the fact it was away from the more industrial parts o the city. Thus, a lot of single family homes were built and throughout the 20’s and 30’s; due to the lack of deed restrictions there was a healthy influx of African-Americans families into the neighborhood.
